Taneyev Sergey Ivanovich (1856-1915)
Russian composer, pianist, teacher, scholar-musicologist. He was born in Vladimir in a noble family, leading the history of the 15th century. In the Taneyev manor in Marinino (Kovrov district), that has been preserved almost intact, a unique museum and cultural and educational complex is created today. There is a memorial plaque on the building, located on the site of the former parental home of S.I. Taneyev in Vladimir (Bolshaya Nizhegorodskaya st., 5). There S.I. Taneyev spent his childhood, began to learn music from the age of five. It was early enough that he left for Moscow to study at the conservatory, which he graduated with a gold medal in the class of N.G. Rubinstein (piano) and P.I. Tchaikovsky (composition). For nearly three decades Taneyev worked at the Moscow Conservatory as a teacher, professor and some time as a director. Among his students are S. Rachmaninov, A. Skryabin, R. Glier and others. He received European fame as a musicologist in the field of folk music, source study and polyphony. Composer S.I. Taneyev is the author of the opera "Orestea", several symphonies, many chamber-instrumental works and romances. All his life, he kept the memory of the parental home in Vladimir and the spiritual connection with his native Vladimir land. The name of S.I. Taneyev wears the Concert Hall – the Vladimir Regional Philharmonic, in front of its building there is a monument to the composer. The name of Taneyev also is awarded to one of the streets of Vladimir and the city music school No. 1. Taneyev Musical Festival and Taneyev Musical Meetings are held annually in Vladimir.
